WHERE Y'AT - New Orleans, LA - 11/2000
by Michael Dominici
Gina Forsyth has been performing her distinct folk music in the Crescent
City for decades now. She has a stark, honest presence and clear, strong
delivery. She is unique and refreshing because she doesn't try to sound like
anyone else and doesn't resort to stylistic posturing or studio polishing.
Her music is raw, direct, occasionally sweet and always straight from the
heart. Forsyth wrote most of the tunes on this generous offering of sixteen
songs. Besides being an excellent singer, Forsyth also plays acoustic guitar
and violin. Forsyth also invited a slew of special guests to temper her tunes
with a variety of touches ranging from bluegrass, country-cajun, folk and
even eclectic acoustic-pop that nods in the direction of Tracy Chapman. "J'ai
Fait Tout le Tour de Grand Bois," certainly on the highlights here, displays
her affinity for authentic country-French music of Acadiana. "The Sweetest
Sound" is a beautiful tune that hones in on Forsyth's artistry as a
singer/songwriter. The romantic heartfelt sentiment is enhanced by the
minimal accompaniment of Marvin Williams' acoustic bass and Forsyth's guitar
work. You Are Here is a fine example of Gina Forsyth's unique and enjoyable
folk music.
