THE DAILY ADVERTISER - Lafayette - LA 9/8/2000.
by Walter Pierce
In one of the best independent or small-label submissions from a regional
talent we've received in a way long time, Gina Forsyth rips it up on You Are
Here, an eclectic, beautifully played testament to choosing the right
personnel and crafting a great song.
Florida-born and Alabama-raised, Forsyth digs deep into American folk styles
and beyond on this 16-song record, performing vocals, violin and acoustic
guitar on her own compositions. And she's joined by a positively burnin'
collection of backing players like BeauSoleil's David Doucet and Chicago
mandolin player Don Steirnberg. The BeauSoleil connection isn't just a
fluke: Forsyth has developed and affection for Cajun music; she even toured
with the New Orleans-based Bruce Daigrepont and Mamou-sometimes that violin
turns into a fiddle.
From frightfully honest to frolicsome, Forsyth shows a command of rhythm,
structure and overall composition skills that remains at a very high level
for the length of a very good record.
