Friday, May 17 is going to be a great weekend, packed into one day. I start out playing a couple of shows with the National Park Service, as part of its Bioblitz celebration. Then I travel off to the Red Dragon Listening Room in Baton Rouge and open for Chuck Brodsky.

The Red Dragon is at 2401 Florida St., just a mile or two from downtown Baton Rouge. For more information, tickets, etc., check the calendar.

Just a month or so ago, I was recovering from Folk Alliance and busily practicing fiddle parts for the Hank Williams tribute show that happened just last week at the Liberty Theater in Eunice, LA (I don't even remember if I posted that show on my calendar; if I didn't, I apologize to all my fiddle fans out there).

Then on March 12, I played an early set at the Neutral Ground before my friend Hank Woji, who drove in all the way from Terlingua, TX. That's right, Terlingua--conjures up images of Jerry Jeff Walker, Butch Hancock, Ray Wylie Hubbard...you know, those guys.
Well, we're doing it again this weekend--this time at Fair Grinds, in Mid-City, Saturday, May 11, starting at 7:30 pm.

On Facebook (There's also a fan page; I'll be linking that at a later date.)

At a show--imagine that! Seriously, just look for me on the calendar, at the link to your left.

Those who have checked out my website know that Promised Land is not just a movie starring Matt Damon.

This week, I also got the great news that the new CD was the 9th most played CD on the Folk DJ List for 2012!

Also on the list, the title song was #24 on the list of Top Songs, yours truly was #34 on the list of Top Artists (along with my friend, Drew Nelson, who also had a song called "Promised Land" on his terrific CD, Tilt-a-Whirl  (#13), on Red House Records)--and my amazing label, Waterbug Records, made the Top 10 Labels: this also on the strength of great new CDs by Sarah McQuaid (#14), Ben Bedford (# 52), Cosy Sheridan (#100), and all the wonderful music Waterbug has made in the 20 years since it began as a community of renegade singer/songwriters. Thank you, Andrew Calhoun, for all these years of believing in us!

I had such a great time ringing in the new world--or should I say, the old one staying here for the time being--that I completely forgot to wish everyone a happy holiday season.

Now 2013 is upon us and people are already making their lists of faves for 2012. I'm happy to say that Promised Land appeared a couple of them--

Speaking of faves, of all the faves list, here's my fave. It comes from Lilli Kuzma, host of Folk Festival, on WDCB, in that great and glorious expanse known as Chicagoland:

"Promised Land is an album no folk music lover should pass up. Well-written tunes, crisp production and instrumentation framing a message of reminiscences from a performer who does it as well as it can be done."

--John C. McClure, Victory Review June 2012

Promised Land hit #3 on the Folk DJ list and made the final voting round of 50 to determine the Grammy nominees for "Best Folk Album."
